“White tea has the rarest and
most delicate flavor and is different from all others.”
--- Emperor Hui Zong,
Song Dynasty, 11th century, China.
White teas are the
purest and most elegant of teas. Silvery ‘two leaves and
a bud’ are hand-picked under strict conditions during
early spring from a rare varietal tea bush called
Narcissus or ‘chaicha’ bush found mainly in the Fujian
Province of China.
Unlike green or
black teas which are steamed and fermented, white teas
are the least processed, sun-baked and withered,
resulting in a clear infusion with a delicate fragrance
and a mellow sweet taste without the grassy undertone of
other teas.

White teas contain
the same antioxidant flavonoids found in green teas,
some in higher concentrations. Research at the Linus
Pauling Institute has shown more potent anti-mutagenic
activity from white teas compared to green teas. A study
has suggested that white teas may enhance drug-diet
interaction for cancer chemoprevention.
The cosmetic
industry has added white tea to skin creams for the
detoxifying effect of white tea on free radicals which
cause skin to sag.
The 2002
International Scientific Symposium on Tea and Human
Health presented studies on tea flavonoids’ potential in
promoting heart health and reducing the risks of some
cancers. More research is needed to determine the
definitive role of tea in health promotion, but current
research looks promising.
